Park City - Crazy Chemworks
Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.
Day 1
Lab Works: Hands-on activities teach kids the basics of using lab equipment such as pipettes, flasks, and stirring rods. The educational goal is to introduce kids to the basic techniques, tools, and vocabulary needed to navigate lab work in the future.
pH pHactor: Students learn the basics of acids, bases, and the pH scale. Experiments will let students learn the pH of common household chemicals and bring a mystery liquid to balance the pH. The educational goal is to explain the basics of the pH scale using common household chemicals so they can understand its impact on their day-to-day lives.
Day 2
Junior Reactors: An introduction to atoms and reactions. Kids learn the basics of atomic theory, the difference between chemical and physical reactions, and how atoms bond. The educational goal is for children to understand how atoms work, recognize the differences between reaction types, and model the atoms involved in reactions.
Che-Mystery:
Continue exploring chemical and physical reactions with hydroponic sand and shaving cream.
Day 3
Slime Time: These experiments are meant to show kids how polymers function and how a chemical reaction can turn them into a cup of slime. They can experiment with the properties of the rubber-like slime in a variety of games. The educational goal is for children to learn about the chemistry of polymers through hands-on activities.
Chem in a Flash: Kids learn about the types of chemical reactions, the rate of reaction, and the limiting factors in a reaction. The educational goal is for children to understand the factors that influence reaction rates, the role of catalysts, and the factors that limit a reaction.
Day 4
Dry Ice-Capades: Kids learn about the states of matter and how they change with the help of dry ice, which undergoes a visually interesting change and sublimates at room temperature under normal pressure. The educational goal is for students to understand the differences among states of matter and the factors that cause them to change.
