History Through Board Gaming: Samurai Battles in Medieval Japan (Age 11-14)
Medieval Japan (1185-1868) is a period in Japanese history that is often called the Age of the Samurai. It is a period marked by ruling governments led by the warrior class - the Samurai which rose to power in the 12th century. The Samurai were highly skilled, stoic warriors who distinguished themselves on the battlefield and lived by an unwritten code of conduct which held bravery, honor, and personal loyalty as the most revered cultural values.

In this camp, students will get the chance to recreate some of the most famous battles involving warring clans led by feudal warlords. These battles will be recreated using a historical board game with a map, terrain and blocks representing military units. Students will command Medieval Japanese infantry, cavalry and archers, including elite Samurai units on the battlefield. Students will learn about battlefield tactics of the era while having fun playing games and learning about history. Co-sponsored with Game Night Games.
