There has been a sharp decline in the western monarch population in recent decades, which has been directly attributed to the decline in the milkweed. Milkweed is highly susceptible to herbicides used in large agricultural businesses, therefore reducing the primary food source for the monarch larvae and butterfly during migration. Construction of homes and businesses also contribute to the loss of milkweed habitat. By planting milkweed patches throughout the west, we have the opportunity to provide breeding grounds and a food source for the monarchs. During the migration of the monarchs they now locate the milkweed plantings on their migration routes and ensure a successful migration for adults and nursery for the larvae. The planting illustrates the value and importance of pollinators in an ecosystem.
