World Whale Day Celebration - Natural History Museum of Utah

In honor of our current special exhibition, Orcas: Our Shared Future, we're hosting a World Whale Day celebration! Join us for crafts, games, storytelling, and more! Enjoy a fun-filled day at the Museum, explore Orcas, and learn more about the semi-aquatic animals that live across Utah! This event is included with museum admission, which is free for Museum Members.

Activities Across the Museum

Swaner Forum

Learn about the importance of whales from both cultural and biological perspectives.

  • 1:00 PM — Storytelling by Laufou Jake Fitisemanu, Samoan Community Leader, Traditional Chief, Storyteller

  • Centrality of Sperm Whale Ivory Regalia in Samoan Culture; Legend of the Tafolā Constellation, Li’I Riding a Humpback Whale Into the Sky

  • 3:00 PM — Lecture by Rylee Jensen, Southern Resident Killer Whale Researcher in the Pacific Northwest

  • Understanding Orca Surface Behaviors, Including Breeching and Tail Slapping

Naturalist Lab

Engage with some of the living semi-aquatic animals (toads, frogs, and salamanders) that call Utah home!

Dry Caves

Stop by the dry caves to play Ecco The Dolphin, a video game from the 90’s that puts you in the fins of a dolphin searching for their lost pod.

Earth Lab

Drop by anytime during the event for orcagami, an orca-themed origami activity!

Canyon

Shadow puppet performances will be performed every 15 minutes from 11:00 am to 1:00 PM — puppets and scenery are created using environmentally friendly resources.
