10th Annual Utah Dance Film Festival

The 10th annual Utah Dance Film Festival will showcase worlds within dance film, and feature artists from all over the globe. From animation to documentary, flamenco to ballet, festival audiences will enjoy cinema that is only available on the film festival circuit with an emphasis on framing movement artists. There will be three free events, open to artists and cinema nerds of all ages, including the Awards Showcase, and two film workshops with hands-on labs. There will be four screenings of collected shorts, two feature screenings, filmmaker panels, and live performances by local dance companies.

Screening 1
A collection of short films ranging from 3 to 16 minutes, featuring films from the BYU Dance Department, Greece, Israel, China, the UK and Canada. Dance forms include contemporary, ballet, flamenco and disco. Films communicate inspirations such as motherhood, a classical ballet story, animation, fashion, and visual art in galleries.

Feature Screening
Return Dance Project: Carry Me Home tells the story of four sisters who are sent on an ancestral mission to celebrate, collect and protect the sacred four elements of Earth, Fire, Water & Air. Their mission takes them across the globe, dancing with diverse sacred lands and experiencing rich abundance followed by loss, disconnection, and change when they forget their mission, abandon the Earth, and turn away from each other. Finding themselves alone in a barren landscape, the sisters work to reunite and carry forth the elements needed to plant the seed of hope. Filmmaker Q and A following screening.

Screening 2
A collection of short films ranging from 4 to 29 minutes, featuring films from Kenya, The Philippines, Poland, Mexico and the US. Dance forms include contemporary, modern, movements from the Masaai people and culture, and films include documentary, comedy and pieces inspired by visual art.

Screening 3
A collection of short films ranging from 2 to 11 minutes, featuring films from the UK, Poland, China, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Spain. Movement forms include hip hop, contemporary, and modern. Films in this screening range from comedy to an underwater exploration, and examine themes from dealing with the pain of addiction to the growth from childhood to adulthood.

Screening 4
A collection of short films ranging from 2 to 10 minutes, featuring films from the US, Canada, China, El Salvador, the UK, and France. Movement forms include ballet and contemporary, and films feature styles ranging from stop motion animation to commentary on living in harmony with nature.

Screening 5
A collection of short films ranging from 3 to 23 minutes, featuring films from Canada, South Korea, Israel, the US and Utah. Movement forms are mainly focused on contemporary. Two dance companies are featured in this screening: the Korean National Contemporary Dance Company performs in their version of Bolero, set in an office with conflict between co-workers, and Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company interprets dance on the football field. A filmmaker Q and A will follow this screening which includes Utah filmmakers.

***Late seating permitted only between films.***

Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, August 6 at 8:30pm. No ticket is required to attend awards ceremony.

Age policy: Recommended for ages 8 and up. Children 13 months and under (babies in arms) do not require a ticket. In Screening 3, there is one film which addresses mental health and addiction which uses coarse language.
