Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

Tomorrow is Independence Day. It is a day that we Americans celebrate freedom, and think about what it means for a country to be free, and what it took to become a country that is free. Today, I'm thinking about what our country's unique dedication to freedom will mean for my daughters, Madison and Ella...not right now, but when they’re adults. How can they learn to promote freedom, to defend freedom, and most important, to embrace the joy and fulfillment that freedom makes possible?

Freedom of the marketplace: My girls will be free to create their own means of survival and prosperity. Whether they work for someone else or--like their mother--become their own boss, a successful career in the 21st century will require entrepreneurial skills. So we cultivate initiative, creativity, persistence, and leadership.

Freedom to explore: We live in a beautiful and, sometimes, not-so-beautiful country. Traveling through it to learn about all different kinds of people and landscapes and ways of life will enrich my daughters in ways they can't even imagine. So we cultivate a spirit of adventure, of curiosity, of interest in everything around them.

Freedom to express themselves: The First Amendment to the Constitution affirms our right to express ideas free of government restraint on or punishment for their content. As we’re all aware, this protects the expression of many foolish, ugly, vicious ideas, even as it protects the ideas that are the highest purpose of free speech: new, true, great ideas...ideas with powerful potential for benevolent change. What my girls express someday needs to be well-thought-through, so we cultivate the habits of reason, careful listening, and respect for the facts.

What do all of these qualities--initiative, leadership, creativity, curiosity, reason, and the rest--add up to? Well, what do you know: They are all different faces of the same concept: INDEPENDENCE.

Happy Independence Day from our family to yours.

2) Wondering when your local Fourth of July Parade is? Check out our big list of local Independence Day parades and celebrations. Note: Because July 4 is on a Thursday, next week your newsletter will come on Wednesday, July 3. So much going on for the 4th!

3) July 4 events in West Jordan:

Start your day at 10:30 am watching as West Jordan's Fourth of July Parade runs down Redwood Road from 7000 South to 7800 South, where it turns west and ends at 2200 West.

Next, at 10 PM celebrate our Nation's birthday at the West Jordan Fireworks Finale! Beautiful fireworks light up the sky!

Last, but certainly not least, the PRCA rodeo will be held July 4-6. Come experience action packed thrills like saddle bronc riding, mutton bustin' bull riding, MX Freestyle, and more. Fireworks finale on July 4!

4) "I am at two with nature"--so said both Woody Allen and our Hudson Valley editor, Anne Siller. Anne loves kicking her kids away from the TV and out the door, but as she's right in the heart of tick country and has three paler-than-pale redheads under the age of 7, it's always with a sense of trepidation and a lot of slathering on of bug spray and sunscreen. (Which goes on first?) So it was with a mixture of joy and suspicion that she undertook to review two sets of clothing products with protection woven right inside: Insect Shield, which has insect repellant, and Coolibar, which has UV protection. Did the clothing work? Did it live up to her expectations? (And did it smell weird?) Find out in the KidsOutAndAbout review of Insect Shield and Coolibar.

8) How to "Like" us more effectively

On the KidsOutAndAbout Facebook page, we often have interesting discussions, and that's where we announce giveaways first. Lots of you are signed up to get our Facebook posts, but recent Facebook changes mean they only show a few hundred of you any of our given posts... unless... you "like" us specially.

Here's how: If you go to our Facebook page, hover your mouse over the "Like" button. When you do, you'll see two lines: Show in News Feed, and Add to Interest List. Please make sure both are indicated. When you hit Add to Interest Lists, if you don't have any interest lists, you can just add a new one. How about calling it: Stuff to do with kids! That way you should be able to hear from us when we post. Thanks.
