PBS KIDS Utah Writers and Illustrators Contest

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 04/15/2022
The PBS KIDS Utah Writers and Illustrators Contest is back for its 21st year and is now accepting submissions! The annual contest aims to foster creativity and literacy in young Utah artists and writers. Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are encouraged to submit original stories, complete with a minimum of five illustrations. Individual children or classes may submit stories. Stories can be fact or fiction, prose, or poetry, as long as they follow this year’s theme: “Anyone can be a hero!” Stories will be accepted now through April 15th.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

This year's theme is "Anyone can be A hero!"

“Anyone Can Be A Hero” with PBS KIDS Utah. It’s the 21st Anniversary of the Writers & Illustrators Contest and we are celebrating all of the superheroes in our lives and in our imagination!

Fred Rogers once said, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people helping.” Grab your notepad and pencil and get inspired by looking for the helpers around you. They are SUPERHEROES, and YOU can be a HERO too. You can clean up around the house, help in the yard, walk a pet … and the best way to help is to be a good friend. Jot down story ideas and sketch drawings as you go.

Stories can be fact or fiction, as long as they celebrate the heroes around us!

Here is everything you will need to help your young writer and artist submit their entry:

  1. First, check out the Contest Entry Form and Rules (Download Entry Form). It has all the information you need to get your story ready to submit! Make sure you can enter the Contest.
  2. Print off the Contest Entry Form and Rules (Download Entry Form). Have a parent or guardian fill out the form completely, sign it, and mail it with your story to be entered in the Contest. NEW this year, your parent or guardian can fill out the form online and upload your story and illustrations. (Please keep the originals, we will need an original mailed in if you are chosen as a winner.)
  3. What should your story include? 1) A beginning, middle, and end – remember to stay within the word count! 2) A central event, like a conflict or discovery. 3) A minimum of 5 illustrations that help tell the tale. For inspiration, check out the stories from last year.
  4. Stories must be received by April 15, 2022!

Winners, who are announced in May, will receive a PBS KIDS Utah prize pack and have their stories published online. The stories will be showcased in a traveling art exhibit hosted by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums!
