Bruce Experiences: Off the Beaten Path: Adventures in the Field - Webinar via Zoom.

How does one pursue a job working with endangered species? What kind of background encourages such interests? Learn how two conservation biologists turned childhood interests into fascinating and rewarding careers working with wild animals. You will learn about the advantages of having an outdoor childhood, patience of supportive parents, benefits of professional mentors, and the importance of doing what you love. Tim Walsh (Bruce Museum) and Dr. Craig Stanford (University of Southern California) will share stories of their unique backgrounds and present details of their current research efforts.

Tim Walsh is a museum professional with 30 years experience in the field. Much of his career has been focused on herpetology with a specialty in turtles, and he has worked in zoos, public aquaria, science centers, and museums. His recently found passion for history has a focused interest on the founding curators of the Bruce Museum, where he currently serves as Collections Manager, intending to write the biographies of these two forgotten naturalists. Tim has a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies with research interests in conservation education, history of natural history, and reconnecting children and adults alike with nature. He is a member of the IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group, a Fellow of The Explorers Club, published photographer, and book collector.

Craig Stanford, PhD is a primatologist and biological anthropologist. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and is currently Professor of Biological Sciences and Anthropology at the University of Southern California, where he also serves as co-Director of the U.S.C. Jane Goodall Research Center. He has carried out field studies of chimpanzee hunting behavior in Tanzania in collaboration with Dr. Jane Goodall, of chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in Uganda, and of langur monkeys in South Asia. Stanford has published seventeen books and more than one hundred scholarly and popular articles. His books have covered topics ranging from the evolutionary roots of humanity to the behavior of primates, to conservation of endangered primates and other animals.
