Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

A watched maple tree never bursts into color.

When I was growing up in Cranford, NJ, I was a big leaf-pile jumper. I didn't consider fall really to have arrived until the silver maple in my front yard turned yellow and dropped its leaves into rake-able piles. The only problem was that mine was always the last tree in the neighborhood to turn, and so it would be a full month between when the calendar said it was fall and when my personal fall actually arrived. A month is forever as far as a 6-year-old is concerned.

Nowadays, if I'm not careful, I will blink, and it will be Thanksgiving.

How can we grownups simultaneously slow down time for ourselves and make the season vivid for our kids? The answer is simple, really: PLAN! Don't just let the fall happen, or it will be over before you've done anything. Planning gives you something to look forward to, which both helps slow down time for adults and builds up anticipation for kids.

So when you're looking at the KidsOutAndAbout.com calendar, don't just check out this weekend's events, look at the next weekend's, and the next! Plan to do some traditional fall activities, like a corn mazepumpkin patchapple picking, or fun on the farm, and talk it up in advance! At the very least, talk about what you're going to do when the leaves finally fall and the whole family gets to rake.

Of course if you're lucky enough to have a maple tree handy, watch it! Time will slow down. Trust me.

2) A Minotaur? Our Westchester County editor, Anne Siller, decided that this was the year she would try to make her kids' Halloween Costumes by hand. Do you think her son chose something easy and manageable, like a ghost? No, he wants to be a Minotaur. Check out Anne's article on why someone would hand-make her kids' Halloween Costumes hereThere are four main reasons, none of which have to do with fear of 5-year-old Minotaurs. (OK, she backs off on one of the reasons.)

3) It's FALL! The corn mazes are being navigated, the pumpkins are just about ripe, and there's fun to be had all over. Check out our fall seasonal lists:
