Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

This past weekend, I was driving late at night on my way back from a festival when I stopped at a gas station out in the middle of nowhere. I was just hanging up the pump when an old Indigo Girls song, "Least Complicated," came on over the loudspeaker. I thought to myself happily, as one does when encountering a meaningful old song out of the blue, "Wow, what are the chances?"

I got back in the car, turned it on, and started to pull out. But then I somehow felt compelled to stop and roll down the window to listen. For a few moments, I was transported blissfully back to the mid '90s when David and I first got together. Then I told myself, "This is silly. This song is on your iPod on the seat next to you. You have a long way to go tonight. Be a grownup, put in the earbuds, and get on your way."

Most of us have this experience: A good song played on the radio feels WAY more meaningful than one you turn on deliberately. Some even think it's a matter of cosmic coincidence, though my mind doesn't swing that way; I think meaning is what humans make of it. So what did I make of this? I realized that coming unexpectedly upon an old song is like rounding a corner and finding a delightful piece of your own soul floating in the breeze. You have the opportunity to acknowledge it, greet it, and celebrate it.

So I did. I listened all the way through. It was the least complicated thing to do, anyway.

P.S. And this is a promise: The next time that One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" comes on the radio and my kids clamor, "Leave it on! We love that song!" even though that still plays seventy-gazillion times a day, I'm not going to switch the station.

10)How to "Like" us more effectively

On the KidsOutAndAbout Facebook page, we often have interesting discussions, and that's where we announce giveaways first. Lots of you are signed up to get our Facebook posts, but recent Facebook changes mean they only show a few hundred of you any of our given posts... unless... you "like" us specially.

Here's how: If you go to our Facebook page, hover your mouse over the "Like" button. When you do, you'll see two lines: Show in News Feed, and Add to Interest List. Please make sure both are indicated. When you hit Add to Interest Lists, if you don't have any interest lists, you can just add a new one. How about calling it: Stuff to do with kids! That way you should be able to hear from us when we post. Thanks.
