Children’s Summer Reading Kickoff: Steampunk Teddy Bear Picnic
For this year’s annual Teddy Bear Picnic and summer reading kickoff, we encourage you to bring a picnic to eat outside and dress yourself and your stuffed animals up in steampunk costumes. Drop by the Children’s desk afterwards to pick up your summer reading brochure and check out some great books to read this summer. The picnic will also be held on Monday, June 5, at 7:00 PM, and Wednesday, June 7, at 10:30 AM.

Most people are familiar with the art of origami, or paper folding, but did you know it can help engineers solve problems in space? Find out how principles of origami are inspiring spacecraft technology with BYU mechanical engineering professor Larry Howell and try out some origami folding of your own.

Experiment with a variety of art techniques, including collage, spin art, magnet painting, tennis balls in a pool, and more as you create a work of art that represents you at our annual outdoor art carnival. Wear something you can get messy.

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible across the continental United States. Join Solar System Ambassador Amy Oliver from Clarke Planetarium and NASA’s Night Sky Network to build your own eclipse viewing box and learn more about this rare and spectacular event.

Children’s Summer Reading: Build-a-Book Workshop
How many steps does it take to make a book? Learn all about writing, illustrating, publishing, and more in an interactive panel with authors Jess Smart Smiley and Dan Hughes, and illustrator and cartoonist Brent Hill. Then apply what you’ve learned and put together a book of your own to take home.

Children’s Summer Reading Finale: Make It or Break It
There’s no better way to learn how things work than by putting them together, except maybe taking them apart! Celebrate the finale of summer reading at our outdoor Libratory, which will have many stations for you to practice your building and breaking skills, including a keynote “Will it Blend?” presentation with Tom Dickson of Blendtec.
